Collie students gain practical experience in energy sector

Collie Senior High School students have gained exposure to Western Australia’s energy sector through work placements at Synergy’s Collie Battery Energy Storage System and Muja Power Station.

The high school students worked to grow their knowledge of the electrical, mechanical and administrative operations of battery energy storage systems and coal-fired power stations by shadowing engineers and skilled tradespeople.

Synergy Acting CEO Kurt Baker, said it was important to invest in the future workforce of the energy sector, as well as building transferable skills, through work experience opportunities.

“We were thrilled to host high school students at both the Collie Battery Energy Storage System and Muja Power Station offering them a chance to gain hands-on experience across different areas of WA’s energy sector,” he said.

“Battery energy storage systems are a relatively new energy technology. The Collie Battery Energy Storage System work experience opportunity allowed students to participate in hands-on learning at one of the biggest battery systems in Australia.”

The Collie Battery Energy Storage System placements were coordinated by SCEE Electrical, the principal contractor at Synergy’s Collie Battery Energy Storage System.

Synergy’s Collie Battery Energy Storage System will provide a massive 500MW of power with 2000MWh of energy storage.

Once complete, it will mean Synergy has delivered 3000MWh of battery storage in 4 years, helping to ensure the security and reliability of WA’s energy system.
