Collie battery construction milestone: all 640 batteries in place
As announced by the Western Australian Government here.
A significant construction milestone has been achieved with all 640 batteries and 160 inverters in place at Synergy’s Collie Battery Energy Storage System.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Premier Roger Cook and Minister for Energy and Decarbonisation Amber-Jade Sanderson visited the site in Collie to mark the occasion.
When complete, the Collie battery will be one of the biggest batteries in Australia, providing 500 megawatts (MW) of power with 2000 megawatt hours (MWh) of energy storage.
The Collie battery is on track to be completed later this year and will be ready in time for summer.
Construction started onsite in January 2024, with the first containerised battery units arriving in Bunbury Port six months later and they were transported to Collie by road.
Synergy used a local construction company and current commissioning works are being undertaken by WA-based SCEE Electrical. More than 500 jobs were created during the construction phase.
The Collie battery is Synergy’s third grid-connected battery, with two battery energy storage systems in Kwinana (KBESS1 and KBESS2) now helping to ensure the reliability of WA’s energy system.
Battery energy storage systems stabilise the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) by absorbing excess solar energy during the day and discharging it in the evening peak. They can also charge and discharge large amounts of energy rapidly to dampen minute-by-minute fluctuations.
