Across WA, there are more rooftop solar systems and solar batteries than ever before. These are known as distributed energy resources. A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) involves aggregating these distributed energy resources and then dispatching electricity based on demand, in the same way as a traditional power plant.
VPPs could play a major role in WA’s future. In conjunction with the State Government, we are transforming a number of WA schools into smart and flexible VPPs. Along the way, we’ll be providing opportunities for schools to become more energy efficient and explore new opportunities in renewable energy education.
Solar power production peaks during the sunniest part of the day, which is generally between 10am and 2pm here in WA. Our Midday Saver is designed to encourage our customers who are participating in the pilot and have solar at home to shift their electricity use to the middle of the day where possible.
This pilot allows selected Department of Community housing tenants to take advantage of rooftop solar installed on their rental property. The solar system is owned and maintained by Synergy however the tenants receive the benefits of having rooftop solar by providing more affordable electricity during the day between 9am and 3pm when solar generation is typically highest.
