Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme

If you’re going to source power from a small renewable energy system, you could generate more power than you actually need.

The Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme gives eligible customers the chance to reduce their energy bill from any excess wind, solar or hydro power they generate. Once your small renewable energy system is connected to Western Power’s network, you can export this surplus energy back into the network. We’ll then pay you for this exported energy, in accordance with the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme terms and conditions.

Availability and conditions

The Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme is available to residential customers, not for profit organisations and educational institutions. Eligible customers must have a small renewable energy system between 500 watts and 5 kilowatts. The system must also have an approved bi-directional meter and all necessary approvals including, but not limited to, approvals from Western Power and Synergy. Please refer to the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme terms and conditions for more information regarding availability and conditions of the scheme.

Customers not eligible or not wishing to participate in the for the Renewable Energy Buyback scheme must still apply to connect a renewable energy system in order to import and export electricity to Western Power’s network. If you are not eligible for the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme you will need to apply to Synergy for Renewable Energy Systems and Bi-directional Metering.

If you are eligible for the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme, you will need to follow these steps.

How to participate in the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme

Step 1. Applying to Synergy for the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme

Once you have completed your application to participate in the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme, and it’s accepted by Synergy, you will be provided with a reference number, which you will need in order to complete Step 2.
For a quicker response, please include your email address on the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme application form, so we can email the reference number to you.

IMPORTANT: The Synergy reference number is only valid for 90 days from receipt of your Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme application.  If the reference number expires, you will need to reapply through Synergy.

Step 2. Applying to Western Power for connection approval

In order to connect to Western Power’s electricity network, you will need to submit an application to connect embedded generation to network, using the reference number supplied by Synergy.  Western Power will review your application, and if accepted, provide you with their connection approval in writing.

Information regarding approval to connect a small renewable energy system to the Western Power network can be found at www.westernpower.com.au

Step 3.  Upgrading your meter

Once the connection approval requirements have been accepted by Western Power, your small renewable energy system supplier can proceed with installing your new system.

IMPORTANT: Your new system may not be connected to Western Power’s network until your meter change or reprogram has taken place. Check your meter box for a notice from Western Power to confirm that the meter change or reprogram has taken place.

Step 4. Your renewable energy system supplier completing the installation

Once the connection approval requirements have been accepted by Western Power, your small renewable energy system supplier can proceed with installing your new system.

You are now ready to sell power back to Synergy

Following Western Power’s connection approval, plus your bi-directional meter and system installations, and once you have commenced exporting surplus electricity generated from your system, the next Synergy bill you receive will display the amount of electricity exported into Western Power’s network, and we will pay you for it.

Upgrading or changing your System

In the future, should you choose to upgrade your system and/or inverter capacity, please refer to the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme terms and conditions.  Under the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme you can not change the system without prior approval from Synergy and Western Power. Before you upgrade your system, you will be required to submit a Change of System Application form to Synergy. Please be aware an upgrade may effect your eligibility to participate in the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme.
