Is solar, battery or both right for your home?

How much energy you use each day will help determine the right system size for your property. For example, the average household of 2-3 people in Australia consumes around 18 kilowatt hours (kWh) per day. ^

* A typical Australian house consumes around 16 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per day. This means that a 1-2 kW system could displace 25-40 percent of your average electricity bill. Source: Clean Energy Council

This is the storage capacity of the battery, with a usable value of around 80%. A depth of discharge (DoD) is set for batteries so they’re never fully drained (draining a battery to empty affects their ongoing capacity retention).

Can I add battery storage?

Battery storage might not be right for you just yet because customers with system sizes below 5kW generally don’t reap the most rewards from installing a battery. Still keen to see the difference it could make? Just add a battery.

Let’s add a battery

Add a battery storage solution

Households similar to your's have seen extra benefit from an energy storage solution. Here's our recommendation

This is enough to power a 5 kW wall mounted air conditioner unit for {{selecteAirConHours}} hours.

Frequently asked questions

Technically, yes – but practically, no. Or at least not yet. Batteries which are built to store solar energy are not currently designed to allow you to go off grid. To be fully self-sufficient and disconnect from the grid entirely, your solar PV and battery system size would generally need to much larger to ensure it works properly across all seasons. Find out more

A battery will generally help you to reduce your energy bill. The energy your solar panels generate using the power of the sun is free and the battery will make the most of the way you use this free energy. Changing the way you use energy will have a positive effect on your overall savings. Find out more

Maybe for a few hours. A battery can’t generate electricity, it can only store it. If there is no other generation source (e.g. solar, grid or diesel generator) and your battery has been depleted, it can’t provide power until it has been recharged. Find out more

Yes, you can! This is one of the main benefits of installing a battery system. During the day, your solar panels can generate energy and your battery stores any excess generation you may have until it is fully charged (at battery capacity). Find out more

Getting connected to the grid

Just like any investment you make at your home, the installation process can take some time. Good news is, we've made the process simple and we handle everything from your initial quote to switching your new system on.

From start to finish, the installation process for your solar system or battery can take up to three months.

This depends on a number of factors including how long it takes to get council and Western Power approvals.

Here's a quick guide to the steps involved in the process.

1. Get a no commitments quote
(we'll call you back within 1 business day)

You can take the first step today and request for a quote. We’ll then call you to crunch the numbers and work out a package that is best suited to your unique energy needs.

2. Get connected
(this may take up to 30 days for approval)

Once you’ve accepted the quote, we’ll organise for any site visits to firm up design, send your application to Western Power for approval to connect to their network and make sure that your meter is compatible for SolarReturn.

3. Get installed
(as fast as possible)

Following Western Power approvals we’ll tee up a convenient time for your system to be installed. If we need a deposit, we’ll send you all the details before the installation.

4. Maximise your savings
(every day)

As soon as your SolarReturn system is up and running, it's now time to start enjoying the savings from SolarReturn.

Tell me more about REBS

Great news! If you're eligible, we'll also buy back any excess energy you export back to the grid.

REBS is available to residential customers who consume not more than 50MWh/a, non-profit organisations and educational institutions that have a small renewable energy system between 500 watts and 5kW.  If you're thinking about installing a battery and it has an export limit of 0kW you may also be eligible for REBS payments.   We'll let you know if you're eligible during the connection process.

FAQ

Do I need local council approval to install solar?

This varies depending on your individual circumstances. It’s best to double check with your solar installer and local council before proceeding with a solar power system.

What to expect on installation day

You've done the research, obtained a quote, confirmed a supplier and decided to progress with installing solar PV for the home. The next step is to book in a date for the team from Synergy to come and install the solar panels. Read on for a run down of what you can expect on installation day.

What you need to consider

Purchasing solar elsewhere? We'll still take care of the connection and any eligible rebates

If you’ve bought your solar system from somewhere else, we can help you with your connection and apply for any rebates.  You’ll need to apply to Synergy to get a reference number so you can then apply to Western Power to connect your system to the grid.  The application process is simple, all you’ll need to have handy is a copy of a Synergy bill for the address, the system size details and the installer’s contact details.  We’ll give you a reference number within one business day.
