Top 10 tips for gas safety at work

  1. If you smell gas, report it

It's a legal requirement to add an odour to gas so it's detectable to people. Report these instances immediately.

  2. Switch off gas appliances when not in use

Whether you're leaving work for the day or the weekend, ensure these appliances are switched off.

  3. Check the colour of the flame

Gas flames should only burn blue. If the flame is yellow or red, contact ATCO on 13 13 52 as soon as possible.

  4. Don't use outdoor gas appliances inside

These devices are specifically made for outdoor use. There is not enough ventilation inside to use them safely.

  5. Keep gas cylinders safe

Australia is known for its wild weather. If your business is keeping gas outside, make sure the cylinders are secure.

  6. Know where your gas pipes are

If you're having work done on your property, it's essential to be aware of the nearby gas piping.

  7. Turn off appliances if supply is cut

In the unfortunate event that the gas supply is cut, turn all appliances off. Otherwise gas could flow through them when it is restored.

  8. Is your cylinder intact?

There shouldn't be any dents or visible damage on these. Stop using them as soon as you can.

  9. Keep them upright

Cylinders should be stored in the upright position only.

  10. Separate gas from flames

Gas cylinders should not be stored anywhere near naked flames.

In the event of an emergency, contact ATCO on 13 13 52 as soon as possible.
