Why do electricity retail tariffs change?
The State Government undertakes annual electricity retail tariff reviews to account for any changes in the components that make up the tariff rates. These include electricity generation, transport, regulatory costs as well as the costs associated with maintaining your account. The State Government makes their decision on electricity retail tariff changes based on this review.

Are network access charges changing?

The Economic Regulation Authority has confirmed there are no changes to Western Power’s network access charge price list in 2017/18. 

Are gas prices likely to increase?

ATCO Gas Australia is not increasing its network access charges. Therefore Synergy will not be making any changes at this time. 

We will keep you informed of any decisions relating to the gas network access charges, and how any changes may impact your business.


Why is Synergy changing prices again?

The setting of electricity retail tariffs is determined by the State Government.  These prices are reviewed each year.


What is the impact on my Concession rebate?

The State Government has also announced changes to concession payments.  The Energy Assistance Payment (EAP) will increase to $300 per annum. This is an increase of 28%. Remaining concessions types including the Dependent Child Rebate will increase by 10.9%. Synergy will continue to work closely with government to administer the current concessions program on their behalf. You can find more information on these changes by clicking here


How does this impact on my investment in Solar on my home or business?

The residential REBS rate remains unchanged at 7.135c KWh and the current electricity consumption rate will not change across the A1 tariff.  The FIT payments have also remained unchanged.

The non-residential REBS rate has been aligned to the residential REBS rate of 7.135c KWh. 



Why have generation costs increased so much?

Currently, taxpayers like you are subsidising the WA energy infrastructure to the tune of $300 per household, per year. That’s enough money to build a new hospital every year. 

Under the current system, taxpayer funds are subsidising all residential energy bills, regardless of the person’s ability to pay. The changes will mean that most residential customers will be paying more directly for our shared energy infrastructure, such as poles, wires and electrical systems. 

This means that the more you manage your existing energy usage, using tools such as My Account from Synergy, the less you’ll pay on your electricity consumption charges. To find out more or register, visit



Why has my bill increased even though I am using less and less energy?

The reforms will mean that most customers will be paying more directly for our shared energy infrastructure, such as poles, wires and other electrical network components.

My bill has gone up more than the 10.9% that you said prices were increasing?

The 10.9% is reflective of the average energy customer in WA across both their fixed daily supply charge and their consumption.  This has been set at 14 units of electricity per day.  

By changing the fixed daily supply charge for residential customers, this means that regardless of consumption most customers will have the same dollar increase in their bill.

I notice that the K1 product is not having the same increase in the daily supply charge. Would I be better off on that product?

To be eligible you must provide a valid ABN or ACN to prove you are also operating a business at a site which also has a residential premises at that site supplied via a single connection.  You also need to note that if you are on the K1 product, you are NOT eligible for any FIT or REBS payments.  And in the case of FIT payments once you come off FIT, even if only for 1 day you are unable to go back to this payment.  

You are also NOT eligible for concession payments.  This includes the Energy Assistance payment of $300 or the Dependent Child rebate and Air conditioner rebate. 

You are also NOT eligible for any HUGS assistance.



Does Synergy provide any further assistance?

Synergy has increased its funding to the Power Assist program administered by WACOSS.

What is the ‘Keeping Connected’ Program and how do I access this?

If you are experiencing acute financial hardship and qualify for our ‘Keeping Connected’ program, you may also have access to one of our Case Managers. They will work with you to tailor assistance to your needs. They can give you guidance on managing your bill, provide incentives to help you maintain agreed payment plans and offer advice on how you can reduce your electricity usage.  If you have a life threatening illness or are experiencing long-term unemployment, you may be able to participate in the Power on Payment program.  Case Managers can also provide assistance with applying for the Western Australian Government’s Hardship Utility Grant Scheme.
