Do I need approval from my local council to install a distributed energy system?
This varies depending on your individual circumstances. It’s best to double check with your installer, the Network Operator and local council before proceeding with a system.
Are home batteries safe?
The SolarReturn and battery solutions use batteries based on Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry, which is quickly becoming the battery of choice for residential battery storage.

Can I go off-grid with solar plus battery?

The battery sold with SolarReturn is designed to maximise your solar investment and to store solar energy - but not designed to allow you to go off grid.

To be fully self-sufficient and disconnect from the grid entirely, your system size would generally need to be much larger to ensure it works properly across all seasons. Even then, you would also need a back-up diesel generator.

Can I store energy from my SolarReturn system to use at night?
Yes, you can! This is one of the main benefits of installing a SolarReturn plus battery system.

Can I take the battery with me if I decide to move home?
We don’t recommend taking your battery with you if you decide to move home due to the costs of uninstalling the battery and reinstalling it at your new home.

Does a bigger system mean bigger returns?
There’s no point in buying a large battery if you’ll only ever use 50% of the capacity. Think of your phone plan. You wouldn’t sign up for a $200 option if you only use $50 worth of credit each month. The same goes for batteries: bigger is not always better.

Does Western Power need to visit my property to connect solar?
Yes, if a new bi-directional meter is required to be installed. In some cases, they may need a site visit if they have queries around your proposed installation and system size when completing their technical review as part of the getting connected process.

If you've purchased one of our SolarReturn solutions, we'll let you know along the way.

How do I connect solar to the grid?

Request a quote and our solar guru’s do all the work for you, so you can sit back, relax and enjoy your solar returns.

Step 1: Get us to provide you a SolarReturn quote

Use our handy SolarReturn calculator to work out how much you could be saving with a Synergy SolarReturn system, and request a quote from us. We’ll contact you within the next business day to talk through your system, and the potential savings with you.

Step 2: Send us back your quote acceptance

Once we receive your signed quote, on your behalf we’ll organise all reference numbers and approvals for your system to connect to the grid. You don’t have to do a thing.

Step 3: Organise an installation time

Once connection approval has been provided, Western Power will notify us and we’ll arrange for your meter to be changed or reprogrammed. Systems under 5kW take around 5 or 6 business days to process. Systems between 5kW - 30kW usually take around 10 to 15 business days to process.

Once your meter has been reprogrammed (if required) we’ll contact you to organise a time for your SolarReturn system to get installed by us.

Step 4: Install your SolarReturn system

The day has arrived, and your system is ready to be installed! We’ll need you to be around when we install your system so you can sign off on a few things we legally need to have your signature for.

And that’s it – you’re now making a SolarReturn!

How do you work out the best battery size for my home?

When we recommend the best battery size for your home, we look at a range of factors, including:

  • Your energy consumption
  • Time of day you consume it
  • Your solar energy system size (either new or existing)

When you know how much energy you can generate from your solar energy system and how much energy you typically use, we'll make a recommendation on the size of the battery that would best suit your needs.

How long is the warranty on SolarReturn batteries?
Each battery will come with its own warranty specifications. Standard industry warranties for battery technology can be up to 10 years. Check with your SolarReturn expert for the specific manufacturer’s warranty.
How long is the warranty period for a SolarReturn system

The equipment that we use for SolarReturn products is made to last. All the solar panelsinverters and batteries that we offer come with industry leading warranty periods.

How long will it take for my SolarReturn system to be installed?
Installation times vary depending on a few things, including if your meter needs to be changed or just reprogrammed and the availability of our installers. Generally, from the time we receive your signed application to install a SolarReturn system you’ll have the system installed in 4-6 weeks.
How many solar panels will I need for my home?
The location of your roof in relation to sunshine, shading, dirt on solar panels and temperature all play a part in maximising your solar power production.

How to send us a picture of your switchboard
If you're getting a SolarReturn system installed by us, we'll need you to send a clear picture of your switchboard (sometimes called a fusebox) to us. This is to make sure that the installation goes as smoothly as possible on the day we install your system.

It's generally easiest to snap a picture using your mobile phone camera, and email this to us at

I don't have a battery ready inverter what do I need to do?
There are many ways to configure a battery system. If you don’t have a battery ready inverter, you could get a battery system to be specially fitted with an existing solar energy system.
What access will the SolarReturn installer need to my property?

They will need a clear path to your roof  that is wide enough to accommodate a cherry picker.

What happens on the day?

The installation is normally completed within 1 day. Here's the key steps that the installer will do on the day to get you up and running:

  1. They'll start with setting up the mounting frames on your roof
  2. Next up is attaching the solar panels to these frames
  3. The inverter is then installed on an external wall close to the fuse box
  4. It's then time to connect the electricity cables from the solar panels to the inverter
  5. New safety switches will be added to your fuse box for the solar power system before connecting the inverter to the fuse box
  6. Last but not least, they'll add stickers to you fuse box to notify electricians and emergency services of the presence of your solar power system
What effect could a battery have on my bill?
A battery will generally help to reduce your energy bill. The energy your solar panels generate using the power of the sun is free and the battery will make the most of the way you use this free energy. Changing the way you use energy is another way to maximise the savings on your bill. If you can shift most of your energy consumption into daylight hours, this will help to make the most of your energy and potential savings.
What if Western Power doesn’t approve my solar system application?
Western Power in some cases may not approve the system that has been applied for. Where this happens, Western Power may provide various options, including approving a smaller sized system, or providing the option to upgrade the network infrastructure servicing your property, for a fee, to connect the system.

If your system application is rejected we will work through your option with you and Western Power.

What will my bill now look like with solar?
The good news about solar is that it can make a big difference to the size of your energy bill. This handy guide will help explain what this looks like on your bill.

What would I need to do to go off grid

You would need a much larger battery to give you enough battery charge when the sun isn't shining and producing electricity.

If you don't live near the grid, it could be more economical to install a stand-alone power system rather than pay for a cable to connect you to the network. This set-up would typically have a larger solar PV system, with a much larger battery capacity and back-up diesel generator.

What’s the difference between a battery and an inverter?
An inverter will convert energy into a usable form to be used in your home or stored in a battery.

Who do I contact if there are any issues with my SolarReturn system?
While we only use the highest quality components in SolarReturn systems, we understand that things can sometimes go wrong. If you have any issues with your system, you have access to Synergy’s SolarReturn team and technical gurus.

Get us on 1800 453 021.
Why are home batteries not cheaper?
Like many new technologies, prices are higher than they will be once the technology is more established.
Why do I need to pay for my SolarReturn system on or before installation?
We want to make solar simple. Paying your system directly up front means that we won’t need to perform credit checks and means a single, simple invoice for you to worry about.
Why do some batteries have to be housed in a garage?
Some batteries are designed to be installed indoors. The casing around the batteries often have ventilation ports to keep the batteries well-ventilated and within their optimum operating temperature range.

Why does Western Power need to approve my battery connection if I already have solar?
Western Power needs to assess the impact the battery connection will have to the grid to make sure it's safe to connect and doesn't damage the network.
Will a SolarReturn battery cover me in a blackout?
Our SolarReturn batteries are designed to maximise your solar powered savings rather than provide a back-up power source in case the grid power goes down. If there is a black out on the electricity grid, your SolarReturn and battery system will automatically turn off for safety, and then turn back on when the power is restored.
