At Synergy, we are always working to introduce new, flexible energy products suited to our customers’ needs and that help contribute to a green and bright energy future. As part of a new pilot, we have developed a product that allows customers to take advantage of the excess solar energy available in WA by offering a lower rate in the middle of the day.

What is the purpose of the Midday Saver?

We understand that not all customers are the same and the way they use electricity varies from household to household. We test new products to get a better understanding of the way our customers use their electricity in order to provide better products and services in the future.

WA has the benefit of some great abundant natural resources and sunlight is one of them. Over the past 10 years, the state has seen enormous growth of solar due to which now we have abundant electricity in the middle of the day when the sun is shining. The pilot product is part of a broader program of work in the DER roadmap that is designed to test ways to better integrate renewables into our electricity system for the benefit of all Western Australians.

Participants on the pilot that can shift their consumption to take advantage of the lower rates, will not only save on their electricity costs but also help integrate solar into our grid for the benefit of all Western Australians. This could help increase household consumption of renewable energy within our state and help us maintain grid stability in a high renewable future.

How is the Synergy Midday Saver Tariff Pilot different to my current tariff?
The Residential A1 tariff is an anytime tariff which includes the same flat rate for your electricity usage regardless of the time of day. The Midday Saver product has a variable tariff based on the time of day you use electricity meaning you can receive the lower Super Off Peak and Off Peak rates if you use electricity during these periods, 9 am to 3 pm for Super Off Peak and 9 pm to 9 am for Off Peak.

How can the Midday Saver help you save?

The Midday Saver is a three band Time of Use product that offers customers the lowest rate in the middle of the day, 8 cents for a unit of electricity between 9 am and 3 pm and a20 cents for a unit of electricity between 9 pm and 9 am . By shifting a portion of their electricity usage to the lower cost time periods, customers can save on their electricity costs. Of the 24 hours in a day, customers get discounted energy rates compared to the current Residential A1 tariff for 18 hours in a day, offering a wide opportunity for shifting usage.

For example, running your dishwasher, washing machine, aircon and other appliances that you do not have to run in the evening could help you save on your electricity costs on this pilot.

How does the Midday Saver support the electricity system?

WA has the benefit of some great abundant natural resources and sunlight is one of them. Over the past 10 years, the state has seen enormous growth of solar due to which now we have abundant electricity in the middle of the day when the sun is shining.

The pilot gives customers the opportunity to use this excess electricity we have in the middle of the day and pay a fraction of the cost compared to in the evenings when energy is relatively more expensive.

Customers will potentially be able to save on their electricity costs by shifting their electricity use to times when the price is discounted. Customers on the Midday Saver product that can shift their consumption to take advantage of the lower rates, will also be helping integrate solar into our grid for the benefit of all Western Australians. This could help increase household consumption of renewable energy within our state and help us maintain grid stability in a high renewable future.

How do I make the most of the pilot?

Customers on the Midday Saver can make the most of the product, by shifting as much of their electricity consumption as they can away from Peak period (3pm to 9pm) to Super Off Peak and Off Peak periods (all other times). The more electricity consumption that a customer can shift to these period, the greater the potential savings on their electricity costs.

Shifting consumption to the Super Off Peak period (9am to 3pm) will drive higher savings, because it offers the lowest rate, 8 cents per unit of electricity. Shifting consumption into Off Peak periods (9pm to 9am) will also drive savings as the rate is still cheaper than the current Residential A1 tariff.

Can I take part in the pilot? Can my neighbour/ friend participate?
Applications to participate in the pilot are only open to customers who received an exclusive invitation to apply to participate in the Midday Saver pilot.
