What to expect on installation day

You've gone through the process, obtained a quote, done your research and decided to progress with installing solar PV for the home. The next step is to book in a date for the team from Synergy to come and install the solar panels. Below is a run down of what you can expect on installation day.

  1. The installers will arrive on-site at the previously agreed time.
  2. Installers will set up a lay-down area for equipment and tools.
  3. They will then set up their ladder and harness themselves onto the roof with anchor points, so they are protected if they fall.
  4. They will measure the roof to ensure the installation can go ahead and that there are no further variations required.
  5. Typically the installers are in teams of two or three, which allows them to split themselves across the roof and ground level.
  6. The ‘roofers’ will assemble anchor points and a rail onto the roof to mount the panels.
  7. The ground worker will mount the inverter at an agreed location, which takes into account environmental concerns like sunlight, water and dust. He/she will also mount isolators (rated switches for the task), and connect cables to the switchboard of the property.
  8. The cables from the panels to the inverter are run through the roof space while the power to the house is isolated. The power will be isolated for 1-2 hours, because Synergy doesn’t permit people in roof spaces without 100 per cent de-energisation of the property.
  9. The team then works together to mount the panels, a process which is affectionately referred to as ‘the plonk’, a colloquial term for ‘plonking’ the panels in place.
  10. The cables are then connected on the roof, at the inverter and into the switchboard.
  11. The power is then turned back on and the system is ‘commissioned’. Measurements are taken to make sure the system is installed correctly, without defect and working to expectation. Results are noted and stored.
  12. All serial numbers and images of the installation are then captured, as evidence required for claiming Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). The government uses these certificates to encourage the uptake of solar PV. While there is some variability in the amount of STCs per system, typically the bigger the system the more STCs are received.
  13. Eligible customers don’t need to worry about claiming STC’s as the discount offered is already factored into the purchase price of all SolarReturn sales to simplify the process.
  14. The installers will then ask for a signature from the client on a smartphone (using their finger to sign). Next, along with providing a welcome pack which includes manuals and warranties, they’ll give an overview of how the system works and answer any questions before leaving site.
