Synergy leading energy storage trial

Alkimos beach

Synergy is leading a four year project to trial energy storage technology at Alkimos Beach.

The trial, which is thought to be the first of its kind in Australia, is partly funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and will provide insights into the benefits of integrating renewable generation and energy storage and dispatch into a traditional electricity network.

The trial is a collaboration between Synergy and Alkimos Beach development partners, LandCorp and Lend Lease.

Synergy CEO Jason Waters said today that the trial has strategic significance to Synergy as huge investments and enhancements in technology are rapidly transforming the energy industry and reshaping customer expectations.

"This trial moves Synergy closer to realising its vision to be the first choice for energy and developing and providing, through innovation, energy solutions that our customers want," Mr Waters said.

"Customers have been quick to realise the benefits of having solar PV on their roofs and the next wave of technology is likely to focus on energy storage. The proposition of being able to self-generate and store energy will be compelling to customers.

"Trialling storage technology in conjunction with incentives and energy efficiency principles, on a community-wide basis will provide invaluable insights into how customers adapt their energy usage in the longer-term and how they respond to products and services. At the core of Synergy's strategy is to be able to understand and anticipate what customers want – and then deliver it in a seamless, tailored solution."

The trial includes installation of a 1.1MWh energy storage device at Alkimos Beach and will offer participating residents virtual energy storage, rebates for solar PV, solar hot water system and other energy efficient appliances; an in-home energy display unit monitoring generation and usage; variable price plan; and, an education program to help residents maximise their energy and money saving potential.

"This project is an extension of the productive relationship that exists between Synergy and ARENA, and I look forward to being at the forefront of developing community-based energy storage solutions and working with the Alkimos Beach development partners to realise their vision of creating an environmentally conscious and sustainable community," Mr Waters said.
