Connecting a Newly Built House

Where do I start?

Either you or your builder will employ a licensed electrical contractor who will make an application to Synergy on your behalf and ensure the power is connected by the time you move in.

Before this happens, you’ll need to discuss the following topics with your builder at your pre-start meeting.

  1. Decide on your electricity and meter needs
Before making your application, decide whether you wish to connect to a SmartPower meter, purchase NaturalPower or Earth Friendly electricity, whether a single phase or three-phase meter is required.
  2. Be clear about your address and personal details
Make sure that you and your licensed electrical contractor use the same address details on any correspondence with Synergy. Delays sometimes occur when the contractor uses a lot number and you use a street number, or if your home is on a corner and different street names are used. To avoid any confusion please provide both a lot and street number.
  3. Be clear about stating in what name the account is to be opened. We’ll need a full name, date of birth, contact number, mailing address (if different from the residence) and details of any spouse or partner that will need access to your account.
  4. Submit the paperwork
Once your electrical contractor or builder has all of these details, they will submit the following documents to Western Power:
    1. The ‘First Notice’, advising that electrical work is to commence, along with your account application; and;
    2. The ‘Final Notice’ which is submitted on completion to advise that the work has been completed.
  5. Provide access for inspection
Before we can connect your power, we’ll need to access your house to carry out a safety inspection. To help us out, please make sure the lot number or other means of identification (as stated on the 'First Notice') can be easily seen from the street.

Delays will occur if this inspection finds that the electrical work does not meet current requirements. If this happens we’ll issue an Inspector's Order. The licensed electrical contractor responsible for the installation must then rectify the listed defects, sign the Inspector's Order and return it to Western Power. A follow-up safety inspection must be carried out before the electricity can be connected.

When will my power be connected?

Synergy guarantees that your connection will be completed within 3 to 5 working days in the metro area, or 5 to 7 working days in country areas upon receiving the "Final Notice" from your electrical contractor – as long as your property passes the safety inspection. If an Inspector's Order has been issued, this timing will start from the day the inspection order is returned to Western Power.

How much will it cost?

To open a new residential account a non-refundable Account Establishment Fee of $29.80 must be paid. This charge will appear on the first account we send you.

Holders of certain Department of Social Security and Veteran Affairs cards are eligible for a rebate.

Additionally, a charge of $240.40 will apply to any installation requiring a three-phase connection.
