Natural Gas FAQs

GAS SUPPLY AND CONTRACT QUESTIONS

Why is Synergy now selling gas and what does it mean to me?
Synergy is committed to providing energy to Western Australian businesses -  gas as well as electricity. So if your business spends about $4,000 per annum on gas, you now have a choice of who you buy that gas from.

To be supplied with gas by Synergy do I have to sign a contract?
Yes.  Synergy prefers that you commit to a two or three year contract. However, other contract terms may be negotiated.

Will I save money if I sign with Synergy?
Synergy is one of Western Australia's largest fuel buyers so we are able to leverage our buying power to offer you very competitive prices.

Why should I switch to Synergy?
Synergy offers excellent customer service and value for money.  We are energy experts with dedicated teams of professionals to deal with your enquiries.

Will there be any interruption to my gas supply upon switching to Synergy?
Provided your gas meter can be upgraded to support an interval-metering device, then interruption to supply is unlikely.

If I sign a contract for gas with Synergy, do I need a new meter?
Generally, your current gas metering equipment will stay the same.  In some cases, you may need to have extra equipment attached to allow for interval metering. If this occurs the cost of your metering upgrade is factored into your initial quote for gas supply.

Will it be the same quality (product specifications) of gas I have received from my previous supplier?
Yes.  All natural gas must meet the same legislated requirements and is transported to your premises through the existing network of gas pipelines.

My business is in Regional WA, do I still qualify for a gas contract offer?
Unfortunately, Synergy is only able to supply gas to premises located within the area of the South West Interconnected System.

How will I be billed for my gas usage?  Will it be on my electricity invoice?
You will receive a separate bill for gas and electricity.  This will help with identification of your costs for different forms of energy.

Who do I call if I have a gas emergency?
Customers must call the Gas Emergency Line of 13 13 52 to report these issues.  For all other matters you can speak with us at Synergy.

What is the minimum and maximum length of time I can enter a contract with Synergy for my gas requirements?
Typically, our gas contracts are for a term of three years, however, we are keen to meet your needs, so please ask us if you prefer other terms.

Can I sign up now so I know what my costs will be, even though my annual usage is too low at present?
A government-imposed moratorium prevents Synergy from entering into an agreement to supply gas to a business that does not meet the threshold (180 gigajoules per annum). Once your consumption reaches this level Synergy would be delighted to offer you competitive terms.

I use LPG (liquid petroleum gas)  can Synergy supply me?
No.  Synergy can currently only supply reticulated natural gas.

I'm ready to sign with Synergy today, how soon can I expect delivery?

The process for switching suppliers is very simple and straightforward.  Once you have accepted our quote for sale of gas, Synergy's experienced gas team will arrange the transfer with the Market Operator, which normally takes one or two weeks.

Can Synergy supply gas to my home as well?
Although the retail gas market is fully deregulated, Synergy is prevented by a Government imposed moratorium from supplying gas to users who consume less than 180 gigajoules per annum.

GAS METERING QUESTIONS

When will gas be available from Synergy?
Gas is available from Synergy now for customers with a consumption greater than 180GJ (Gigajoules). If you are interested in gas supply from Synergy, please contact your Account Manager or call our Business Management Team on 1300 859 333.

If I choose Synergy as my new gas retailer will my gas meter have to be modified?
Many of the larger contestable customer meters are suitable, however, you may have to have your gas meter arrangement modified if it does not comply with gas market rule requirements.

Who does the work and what is different about the metering?
Gas metering is not contestable, modifications allow the meter to be remotely read by a telecommunications device.  The meter data is electronically read and transferred to the new retailer (Synergy) via  telemetry reading facility on a daily basis.

Is there a cost for meter modifications and how is it paid for?
Yes, there may be a cost for this modification and it is passed on to Synergy from the meter provider.  When Synergy provides a potential gas customer with a quote for gas supply, the quote will include all costs, including metering.  We show all costs as either fixed or variable in our offer to you.

Once interval metering is installed can it be removed?
When a customer enters into a contract with Synergy for gas supply it is for an agreed time, for example, a three-year period. At the end of the three year contract period, the customer can decide whether they wish to remain with Synergy or choose to contract with another retailer.  The customer can then choose to remove the interval meter facility at this time, subject to Market Rules.

When my contract with Synergy expires and if I choose another retailer, will Synergy require the extra cost for the additional years for the meter?
Synergy will not seek to recover from customers costs associated with the removal of interval metering beyond the expiry of a Synergy customer contract.

What is the benefit of having interval metering?
Having interval metering installed means that we can monitor your gas consumption more closely, in fact hour by hour, which gives you the opportunity to manage your consumption and reduce your operating costs.
