Gazetted Tariffs

Local government authorities not on a StreetVision contract with Synergy remain on gazetted street light tariffs.  Under this arrangement, they can choose a midnight or 1.15am switch-off time or they may opt for dusk to dawn lighting.

Customers who want to include Synergy decorative lamps and maintenance may be signed up on a maintenance contract for their decorative lamps.

Unmetered supplies tariff for private street lighting

Under this arrangement, Synergy only provides the energy for street lighting. The customer is responsible for maintaining the privately installed lighting.

Glossary of street lighting terms

High pressure sodium (HPS)
A high-intensity discharge lamp, which uses sodium vapour in a high-pressure arc tube as the primary light-producing element. HPS lamps produce a golden yellow light. The typical useful life of the lamp is 14,000 hours. With an efficacy of 100 lumens per watt, the HPS lamp is a cost-effective light source.

Mercury vapour (MV)
Mercury high-intensity discharge lamps use mercury as the primary light-producing element. Although this lamp produces a white light, its colour rendering ability is poor. The typical average useful life of the lamp is 12,000 hours (similar to that of a HPS lamp). The efficacy of the mercury vapour lamp is 55 lumens per watt however this deteriorates significantly with age.

Metal halide (MH)
A high-intensity discharge lamp that uses mercury and halide additives as light producing elements. Metal halide lamps provide excellent colour rendering, producing a crisp, blue/white tone light. With a typical useful life of 8,000 hours (approximately half that of HPS or MV lamps), the running costs can be higher than other lamp alternatives. Metal halide lamps have an efficacy of 80 lumens per watt.

Efficacy
A comparison of light output to energy consumption. Efficacy is measured in lumens per watt (lm/W).

Lamp
Also known as a globe or bulb, this is the replaceable unit - the source of the light.

Luminaire
The apparatus housing the lamp which controls light distribution.

Outreach and column
The structural members that mount the luminaires via a horizontal outreach to the vertical street light column.

Arterial lighting
Lighting for main roads.

Suburban lighting
Lighting for minor roads.
